Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve
The Sapta Koshi River, a source of the Ganges, is the lifeline of a 43,000- acre wildlife reserve in Nepal's Terai region. The Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, which presently hosts approximately 500 bird species, was originally intended to protect Nepal's sole remaining population of Asian wild buffalos.
The Asian buffalo has been on the verge of extinction for decades, with only around 4,000 left in the wild. In Koshi Tappu now, there are about 500 buffalo.
Aside from buffalos, Koshi Tappu is noted for successfully managing wetlands that support other endangered species.
The number of Ganges river dolphins, for example, has begun to rise in the region, particularly in the Koshi River. In 2013, India granted the species "non-human person" status in order to better protect them.
